What does Toytown have to offer our family?
We believe that families are God’s idea. There are a number of special events throughout the school year where parents, grandparents, and siblings may participate.
Many families share fond memories of Harvest Fest, our fall event celebrating the bounty of harvest. Our classroom, foyer and additional areas are transformed into booths such as pumpkin bowling, apple dipping, donut bites, cookie decorating, the fishing pond, bean bag toss, Old MacDonald’s farm, the big red barn, face-painting and many more fun activities. We dress up as farmers, farm animals or scarecrows.
Thanksgiving provides another great time for families, as the children have made costumes and then prepare hand-churned butter, cornbread, and applesauce to serve at the Children’s Thanksgiving Dinner.
A precious Living Nativity is presented for the families of the 3s, complete with costumes and props on the stage, while the 4-year-olds present their play, “The First Christmas”, along with a birthday cake for Jesus.
There are also wonderful field trips for students and their families to: a local dairy farm in the fall, a winter museum experience to Explore & More Children’s Museum (web link), and the visit to Sinking Ponds where we enjoy a nature walk and picnic in the spring.
What will my child learn?
While kindergarten readiness is a key objective, we also offer a foundational program for 3-year-olds. The focus is on listening skills, colors and shapes, name recognition, learning to play happily together, and stretching our attention spans through fun times at Circle with singing, stories, and puppets.
We make and keep lots of new friends. Some of our Toytown students and their families have established enduring friendships that have extended well beyond their preschool years.
A number of children will become emerging readers as beginning phonics is introduced to our 4-year-olds. Beginning science is also huge as we observe weather and nature, experiment with volcanoes, plunge into polar ponds, discover magnets and magnifiers, and learn about healthy food choices and strong bodies.
We count, sort, and pattern, along with other basic math skills. We work on our handwriting, art, music, cooking, manners, character education, games, stories and role playing.
Classroom learning is enhanced by visits throughout the year by various community workers: a naturalist who brings in fascinating animals during Zoo Week, our own EAFD firefighters aboard their fire engine for Fire Safety Day, a dental hygienist teaching about healthy teeth and lovely smiles, and a police officer reminding us to play safely, among others as opportunities arise. While these visits are engaging and informative, they also serve to inspire us for careers we might like to consider, as our graduation play is called, “A Job for Me”.
What do families have to say about Toytown?
“Thanks for getting (our daughter) so ready for kindergarten. She’s off to a great start! We credit you with giving her such a strong foundation.”
“He asks me every day, ‘Is it my day to go to school today?’ He can’t wait to get here!”
Our reputation is one of excellence. There is no greater advertisement than that of our alumni families. Year after year we have the pleasure of seeing several of the same families return again and again, with the next child getting ready for kindergarten.
“And Jesus increased in wisdom (academic), stature (physical), and in favor with God (spiritual) and man (social).”
